Earth Day Festival Includes Eco-Green Courier

MILTON, GA., April 13, 2010 - The City of Milton's first Earth Day Festival, organized by the Milton Grows Green Committee (MGG), will take place in 205-acre Birmingham Park on Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Green Express couriers will have one of their eco-friendly hybrid electric cars on exhibit. Green Express couriers is Atlanta's Only Eco-friendly courier. The green drivers are in green hybrid electric cars which get 50+ miles to the gallon, emit 80% toxins than other courier vehicles used in Atlanta.

According to organizers, the festival will feature environmental education for children including clay sculpture using local materials, a workshop on making bird feeders from recycled juice containers and demonstrations of worm composting and pumpkin planting.

There will also be exhibits from businesses offering earth-friendly products and services, self-guided walking tours of the park, wagon rides and food from local restaurants.

Displays will highlight the winners of the local environmental art contests, participating vendors' efforts to conserve energy and resources, rainwater harvesting methods, and educational displays involving recycling, land use and environmental programs already underway in Milton.

MGG members will also explain efforts to qualify Milton as a Sustainable City under the Atlanta Regional Commission's Green Communities certification program. A tree-planting event conducted as part of the festival will be counted as an offset to the city government's carbon usage and provides points that will contribute to the Sustainable City designation.

Local restaurants that follow and promote sustainable practices will have booths offering free samples and food items for sale alongside information about sustainable packaging, reducing waste destined for landfills and farm-to-table menu ingredients.

Anyone wanting to volunteer for the event can contact miltongrowsgreen@cityofmiltonga.us. Limited opportunities for vendors still exist, and anyone interested should contact the e-mail above or call Gina Schwendel at 770-310-6679.

MGG coordinates the efforts of individual volunteers and community-based organizations through the efforts of its own members, who include Milton residents, business partners and those with an interest in the environment in Milton. For more information, e-mail miltongrowsgreen@cityofmiltonga.us.
